Heads Up Foundation Background

Our Mission

Heads Up Craniofacial Surgery Foundation focuses on caring for individuals with facial and ear defects whether they are congenital or acquired. These defects include ear deformities such as Microtia (born with an underdeveloped ear), Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate deformities, and Nasal Deformities. Our goal is to help give these children, of all ages, the best chance to obtain success in their lives. Through reconstructive plastic surgery, these individuals can walk tall and Keep their Heads Up.

In the words of the Father of Plastic Surgery, Gaspare Tagliacozzi (1545-99), “We restore, rebuild, and make whole those parts which nature hath given, but which fortune has taken away. Not so much that it may delight the eye, but that it might buoy up the spirit, and help the mind of the afflicted.”

About the Heads Up Craniofacial Surgery Foundation

The child with a facial or ear malformation has an uphill struggle in life. Younger children tend to try to make friends with almost everyone they meet. It doesn’t matter what another child looks like, typically they are friendly with other children. Around the age of 6-8, children start seeing differences in one another. If a child is “different” than others, that child may be excluded from others in one way or another. Sometimes, all it takes is a little different to start that exclusion. This often results in low self-esteem and self-confidence. In turn, this may affect the child’s ability to do well in school and eventually in a career and a family.

In our experience, we have found certain factors that help in the success of children with facial or ear anomalies. These factors include, but are not limited to, encouragement of a supportive family, a supportive social network, and supportive teachers in school. One of the most significant factors leading to their personal success is the physical transformation that only reconstructive plastic surgery can provide. By surgically reconstructing a congenital or acquired defect, advancing toward a normal appearance, a child’s perception of themself is transformed. This transformation leads to more self-esteem and self-confidence, leading to opportunities for more success in life. As Frederick Douglass stated, “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” As these mended children mature, they also tend to look at others in different ways, with less judgment and more compassion.

The Heads Up Craniofacial Surgery Foundation is dedicated to the success of the younger generation affected with facial and ear deformities whether they be congenital or acquired. All too often, the families of these children do not have the resources or the options to provide the care they desire. These families may find that their options fall short in providing the medical/surgical services that their children need. Our children are the innovators and leaders of our future. We aim to help these children to have opportunities in life that they may not have otherwise. Since we know that our children are the innovators and leaders of our future, we echo that sentiment. We aim to help these children to have opportunities in life that they may not have otherwise.

Mister Rogers said, “Anyone who does anything to help a child is a hero to me.” Heroism comes in many forms. We encourage you to consider donating to the Heads Up Craniofacial Surgery Foundation so children of all ages with facial or ear defects may be able to walk tall and Keep their Heads Up.
