In our experience, we have found certain factors that help in the success of children with facial or ear anomalies. These factors include, but are not limited to, encouragement of a supportive family, a supportive social network, and supportive teachers in school. One of the most significant factors leading to their personal success is the physical transformation that only reconstructive plastic surgery can provide. By surgically reconstructing a congenital or acquired defect, advancing toward a normal appearance, a child’s perception of themself is transformed. This transformation leads to more self-esteem and self-confidence, leading to opportunities for more success in life. As Frederick Douglass stated, “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” As these mended children mature, they also tend to look at others in different ways, with less judgment and more compassion.

The Heads Up Craniofacial Surgery Foundation is dedicated to the success of the younger generation affected with facial and ear deformities whether they be congenital or acquired. All too often, the families of these children do not have the resources or the options to provide the care they desire. These families may find that their options fall short in providing the medical/surgical services that their children need. Our children are the innovators and leaders of our future. We aim to help these children to have opportunities in life that they may not have otherwise. Since we know that our children are the innovators and leaders of our future, we echo that sentiment.
